Hotel Casa Duranta ★★

"Hotel Casa Duranta has some real strengths, but the overall experience falls short. On the positive side, the location is excellent. It’s right in downtown Cobán and very convenient for walking around. The building itself is beautiful, with classic architecture and a lovely central courtyard that gives the hotel a lot of character. The staff were also kind and attentive during our stay. Unfortunately, several issues detract from the experience. The property has clearly seen better days. While the room was clean, it felt tired and poorly maintained. Basic amenities were missing, including bottled water, a coffee machine, and some standard toiletries. The bathroom was very small and also lacked basic items. Noise is another issue. You can hear traffic from the busy street in front of the hotel, as well as noise from nearby businesses. Parking is offsite, which is inconvenient. The biggest drawback, however, is the management. The owner is constantly present but not hospitable. He never greeted us and made guests feel more like an inconvenience than a priority. He has taken over what appears to be a former TV or living room for his personal use and watches TV at full volume every night, which is disruptive and something I’ve never experienced at another hotel. He also reserves a full table for himself at breakfast every morning. The restaurant only serves breakfast, with no other meal options available. Overall, Casa Duranta has a great location and a beautiful building, but the lack of maintenance, missing amenities, noise, and a management approach that seems focused on personal comfort rather than guest experience make it hard to recommend. With better upkeep and a more guest-focused administration, it could be much better."
